Participants in both last year’s and this year’s photograph may begin to feel a slight sense of belonging, at least to the event, if not to the group. As an annual event, the photograph becomes a measuring device: we compare our appearances and our lives to this time last year. Photographs taken with our consent are always staged. Group photographs are also usually scripted (‘Smile!’ or ‘Just look natural!’). In this case we play out the drama on a real stage.
