Backstage at the National Theatre, London
05/12/09
For Re:Stage we waited in the wings of the National Theatre. Most groups in plays are acting with a common purpose, often as crowds – the angry crowd, the mourning crowd, the cheering crowd – or as genuine groups: the advancing soldiers, a group of school children, a group of penitents. They are played by extras – extras that will be remembered – not as individuals, but as a group. With this in mind we laughed on cue; we spoke our lines in unison; we watched an alien craft plummet to earth; we waved goodbye to a departing group and we paid homage to Sir Laurence Olivier.
